We can burn brighter than the sun ;)

When I went to Cagayan de Oro two weeks ago, I had promised myself I would blog about the trip. God has made this one possible, no doubt!

The weather was bad here in Manila, but the sun was shining in Mindanao, and that was what mattered more. (Thank You Lord!) The plane can take off with the rain and clouds here in Manila, but it would be difficult to land with little visibility approaching our destination. So, thank God the sun was shining over CDO. 🙂

Raindrops
Yey to sunshine!
And hello! Welcome to the City of Golden Friendship!

This trip was actually my second time in CDO. My first was back in April 2009, when before we spend our last year in Ateneo, I decided to visit Mea during our short summer vacation. That was the summer when I had to travel straight from CDO to Cebu because my family was going to spend Holy Week there. Ha, very memorable summer, that one.

This time, I only stayed for one weekend. Mea, along with her sisters and mom, all went home to the Philippines. They’ve been in Canada for 2 straight years. Now, they’re back for almost two months.

During my visit, Mea’s family threw a party for their closest friends (batchmates, relatives, etc.). It was a good-natured get-together with cotton candy, photo booth, ice cream, and dancing! By the way, I loved the lechon too, even without sarsa!

With the Balikbayan!

The next day, Sunday, we went White Water Rafting! This was my second time to experience it, as well. The rapids have changed from the last time, mostly because of Typhoon Sendong. And they said that the guides had to re-learn or re-study the flow to make sure they’d maneuver a tourist raft through a safe route.

Before getting all geared up!

During my first water rafting experience, we didn’t have any pictures at all. We were scared our cameras might get wet. Now that Mea’s got this nifty waterproof lomo (helmet) cam, ha! we’ve got the pictures to document (and serve as proof) that we have conquered Cagayan River!

At first, I was (once again!) scared to jump off the raft! But decided there was nothing to lose!

There were peaceful or calm parts of the river and the guides encouraged the tourists to jump and wash the heat away. 🙂 It was scary at first because I didn’t know how to swim. The water was really deep (thus calm). But it was actually relaxing! =D

High Five!!!

Kuya’s hand/finger was visible in most of the photos. LOL. But it was better than no pictures at all, eh? 🙂 And kudos to the kayaking photographers because they do know how to take good photos, they just found the artsy lomo cam new to their taste. Hehehe.

Also, they had this waterproof bag where they put all the cameras. So it lessens your worry that your cam might get wet. They handle it carefully, too. 🙂

They even gave us a shower 🙂

The four-hour ride was still as bitin as ever! You can really never get enough!

We didn’t ask for a flip, though (maybe because they listened to me. I was a scaredy-girl, as usual). And I guess, it was okay. Not that I’m happy with my cowardice, but because the other group we were with had flipped several times, and on one of those times, some of them got bruised and wounded.

Whenever I would try something adventurous, I would remember my mom telling me, before I went with my friends to CWC maybe 4 to 5 years ago, that I should not go wakeboarding. I did not plan to, but she thought I was extra-adventurous and brave that I overestimated my physical capacity. So, she gave me a warning. Hehe. Saying I might get my bones broken. lol.

So, I guess it was okay that we didn’t have our raft flipped. Even the sight of the wounds and bruises of one of the girls from the other group made me wince. ;(

Great White Water Tours is a nice company to book your rafting adventure with. Their guides are awesome and friendly! =D Also, make sure to take the long course with 21 rapids. It’s still bitin, so I can’t imagine how bitin the short course would be!!!

In the middle of the rafting, they give you Pastel and water (I think they gave us juice three years ago. Not sure.) for snack. After the trip, there’s lunch at their headquarters. 😀 Though, we liked the lunch three years ago better. hehe.

Oh! We have a video! But the file’s big that it would take long to upload it here. So I just won’t. HAHA!:))

Anyway, after the rafting, we took some rest, went to church, and then had dinner at this nice little Italian Restaurant in the city.

They had their pastas and pizzas at 30% Off for their anniversary! 🙂 Their food was good! 😀 (UGH I’M HUNGRY NOW) But red wine is really not for me. hahaha.

I only spent two days in CDO, but it’s worth it. Mea’s family was veryyyy accommodating! Close family ties in Filipino families really make me all giddy. 🙂

I was back in Manila by Monday noon, with pasalubong for mama who is in Bicol. Since I was sending package to Dichi anyway, I sent her the Sler’s chicharon (HA! must try!), Pastel, Kasuy, and the Polvoron that Mea’s dad actually orders here in Manila!!! hahaha.

The following weekend, Mea went here with her family. We watched the Ateneo-Lasalle game (Saturday) and went to meet her former roommate in Greenhills (Sunday). So, I had a sleepover at their hotel/apartelle. heehee 🙂 (My third consecutive Saturday spent away from home hahaha).

Missed you, Mea. Don’t go back to Canada anymore! hahaha =D

❤ Kisses

Ateneo’s 3-Peat! Thanksgiving Mass

It’s already 12:30 am and I’m still wearing jeans and this sweaty shirt I wore to mass. So I’m gonna make this quick. I just really have to blog about it because this is such a big deal right now! HAHA

My Alma Mater, Ateneo, won its third consecutive UAAP Senior Basketball (Men) Championship crown (2008, 2009, 2010). Thanks to the internet, I was able to keep myself updated even though I was in the office this afternoon. When we finally won, I ran home and then went to the Gesu with Yaya Nel (who’s such a big fan na now!) and my sister, Vochelle.

At the Church of the Gesu for the Thanksgiving Mass

I was scared during the game, but I believed that we can win it already. Seriously, I kept praying. It was really intense, with Ateneo being far behind during the first quarter and the lead continuously switching all throughout the second half. But teamwork is something that the Blue Eagles know very well. Walang buwa-buwaya!

Ryan Buenafe played really well, I remember back in 2007 (he was still in high school) during the mass held after we lost that very important game against DLSU ( which made us lose our chance to play at the finals) he was also there, which kinda signified his commitment to be part of the team. Then, he won Rookie of the Year come 2008! 😀

As always, the thanksgiving mass was symbolic as it brought together a community of Ateneans–and it didn’t matter whether you’re still a student, part of the alumni, part of the faculty/staff, or just an avid fan. It felt absolutely great to lift this victory up to the Lord. ❤ (Photos)

YEY! So there’s gonna be a Bonfire Celebration on Sunday! (At the AGS/Irwin Theater Parking Area, like last year) I was hoping that it will be at the Bel Field cos it feels more appropriate for such an event, but it’s too risky to hold it there because it might rain again and it might be muddy bonfire 2008 all over again!

Look, back in 2008 (TWO YEARS AGO!!!) (when we won against the archrival!)

MUDDY back in 2008 Bonfire Celebration

Pic with Mea back in 2008

HAHAHA, yes, it was that muddy and we stayed in line the whole night just so we could get the players’ autographs! haha fan girl moments with my college sister, Mea 🙂 ❤

Praising God,

Go for Three-Peat! UAAP Finals Game 1 2010

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

I hope everyone of us still have this in mind, and in our hearts, most importantly. More than Black, more than Kirk Long, Justin Chua, Nico Salva, JP Erram, Eric Salamat, Emman Monfort, and the rest of the blue crew, God’s guidance was what made our team bag that game 1 win.

I never thought I’d watch another ADMU-FEU game live again. After the 2008 St. Ignatius Day game between the two teams where the green-yellow beat the blue-white (which was the first non-ADMU-DLSU game I’ve watched live), and the 2 heartbreaking losses to FEU during this season’s eliminations, I almost felt traumatized. (Okay, that’s overreacting).

But last week, I decided I wanted to watch, because it might be the last weekend game this season. And July 2011 is still too far away! Besides, I want to get Bishi more hooked to the UAAP!

Achi (our eldest sister) was, as always–a blessing, when she worked her charm and magic and found a way to ship Bishi and I to Araneta this afternoon.

Even though we did not have seats (darn upper A reserved seating!), it was absolutely great to be able to watch a live game once more. I realized how much I missed cheering/screaming my heart and lungs out, jumping and throwing my hands up in the air as a blue eagle scores, and being with the crowd of game-crazed Ateneans (both current students and alumni, because once an Atenean, always an Atenean). The energy is just extraordinary. 🙂

Though this was not a close game, thus not as exciting as others may have wished it to be, I am completely happy and thankful by the mere fact that we won! HAHA. And, well, it was not as boring–watching live, even if we were up by more than 20 points for most of the game.

We were inside even before they allowed people in through the main gates, believe me when I said Achi worked her magic! haha

If only I was more "makapal," we wouldn't have left the patron area!
Happy with the Jollibee hand sign thingie =))
look what Ateneo's defense can do to the opponent's score

Game 2 is on Thursday, and everyone’s expecting FEU to come back. Maybe they underestimated the Blue Eagles, or maybe the heightened intensity of a finals game rattled them. But whatever it was that made them seem not as driven to win as the Eagles were, I bet they’re gonna improve on it come Thursday. So, I really do hope and pray that Ateneo won’t let their defenses down and will also keep their offenses up more notches higher. I want a bonfire! Go Ateneo!!!

Dinner + Dessert at Flaming Wings right after, lookie Blue and White sprinkles on the Wicked Oreos 🙂

Against The Archrival

I am too depressed to consolidate my thoughts about the game.

It started great, with a thrilling mid-game tension, awesome 1st half of the 4th quarter moments, and then ended with a shadowed and lost hope. Like the game against FEU, I was also hoping for the last second miracle that I had known Ateneo for. Ever since I started watching UAAP, it was the last second shots that always made the wins sweeter. How I miss the feeling of winning that way! 😦

Marata’s 3-pointers were just unbelievable. It is their time, not ours.

Nonetheless, good game. 1st loss against the archrival after six straight wins. And it’s always more painful to lose against La Salle.

An Ignorant’s Perspective: The FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup finals game 2010 was the first football match I’ve watched ever.

Yaya and I couldn’t sleep last night, so we ended up turning the TV on and watching the “most popular sporting event in the world.” However, the Filipinos just aren’t hooked to football that much. Needless to say, the Philippines is a basketball country (and also a boxing nation!), and although Spain colonized us for three centuries, we never really got to associate ourselves with football!

Insomnia was what led me to watch the game between Spain and Netherlands, and although I got a bit sleepy in the middle of the game, I told myself I’d stay up to watch til the end. I didn’t know the technical rules of the game, so I was more intrigued when the two teams couldn’t make goals! I wondered what would happen if no one scored a single goal, would the game go on and on and on until one team finally scores?

And when Andres Iniesta finally (FINAAALLLYYY!) made it, I almost wanted to scream and shout. But it was 5 in the morning here in the Philippines and it wouldn’t be appropriate to go around screaming like crazy when your neighbors are still on their beds dreaming.

Yaya and I are not football fans, nonetheless, we enjoyed watching the game. Cracking up sometimes when we hear Xavi’s name, because at first we thought it was “chubby” or something like that. lol. We also marveled at the amazing cameras that perfectly captured the game, the precision, the way the motions played out on our small TV screen was just breathtaking. I also imagined myself touching the grass because it looked so soft haha! This was, apparently, how a noob, a football ignorant, reacted to FIFA.

It was actually something fresh for me. I wasn’t rooting for any team, last night (or morning) I just hoped for a goal because, yea, that would be amazing in the world cup finals! 😀

You know what they say, it pays to wait!

An Early Loss

Ateneo just suffered a heartbreaking loss to FEU (69-72), in our very first game of the season. Overall, the game was great. The fight was really close and as the commentators said, it was almost like a finals game.

I really, really, really hoped Nico Salva’s shot went in and extended the game (OT), it would have given the Blue Eagles one more chance to turn the game around. But I guess, some things just have to happen, some losses are actually “essential.”

I remembered season 71 (2008). It was St. Ignatius Day, July 31, a Thursday. Since we didn’t have classes, I was able to watch the game live. Ateneo also played against FEU that time, and we also lost.

But it sort of served as a “wake up call” at that time. It proved it was better to lose earlier in the season, get pumped up more, feel the pressure grow stronger, and keep things grounded.  At least the team’s going to have time to improve.

At the end of the season 71, Ateneo won the championship game against archrival La Salle. We celebrated with that one big bonfire at the “extra-muddy” Bellarmine field. haha!

What I’m trying to say is, this loss was heartbreaking, yes. But it’s just the first game! There’s still a whole season right ahead of us.

I almost thought we were gonna have another buzzer beater to redeem the game. Sort of like Doug Kramer’s back in season 69 (championship game 1) and Kirk Long’s in season 70, both against UST. But that didn’t happen today, and it’s okay. 🙂

The game was great, props to both teams. Art De la Cruz looks promising, Ryan Buenafe sure still got it, Nico Salva made some pretty amazing shots, too. FEU also has a lot of great players, RR Garcia, Paul Sanga, to name a few.

Next game’s against Adamson, this coming Thursday.

Well, that’s it for UAAP now. I sure missed the school spirit 🙂 One Big Fight!
